Worldbuilding Exchange 2023 Letter

Dear Creator,

Thank you so much for creating for me. I look forward to whatever you come up with! I am [archiveofourown.org profile] CeruleanTactician on AO3 as well. All my prompts are just suggestions. If you have an idea that you think will be great, as long as it respects my DNWs, go for it. If you need any clarifications, please don’t hesitate to send a question through the exchange mods.

I have gifts enabled on my AO3 account and would be happy to receive both fic and art treats.

Doctor Who (Big Finish Audio)

Characters: C’rizz, Eighth Doctor, Zagreus Eighth Doctor

  • WB: Church of the Foundation (DW BFA)

I love how what we know about the Church of the Foundation slowly morphs from “peaceful religion that C’rizz used to be a monk in” to “death cult that indoctrinated C’rizz at a young age and made him kill people and absorb their souls”? I would love to see something that tries to make sense of the Church of the Foundation- their practices and beliefs, the Church hierarchy, and how C’rizz’s views on the Church evolve over time. How was C’rizz chosen for his role in the Church and what was his early life like? (Presumably it was very difficult!) How did L’da and her family manage to get C’rizz out of the Church despite his key role in the Church? What are some more positive aspects of the Church that C’rizz takes with him and does he ever share those aspects with Charley and the Doctor?

  • WB: Zagreus (DW BFA)

I want to know more about Zagreus- the legend behind it, the history of that creepy nursery rhyme, how it was created, the effects of being possessed by Zagreus. What is anti-time? How sentient is Zagreus? Just how much of Zagreus!Eighth was Zagerus and just how much of it was Eight? Why did Zagreus behave so differently when possessing Perfection?

Doctor Who (TV Movie 1996)

Characters: Eighth Doctor, Grace Holloway

  • WB: Differences between Time Lord and human physiology (DW 1996)

For this prompt, I would love to see something where Grace gets to learn about the Doctor’s physiology in a hopefully less traumatic way than the surgery incident. (It’s very lucky that the Doctor isn’t the type to hold a grudge!) Perhaps the Doctor gets hurt and Grace needs to know more about his physiology to help him.

I could see this happening in a more casual/teasing context or even an academic context. (Maybe Grace writes a paper on the Doctor?) I do ship these two so feel free to make it shippy as well!

  • WB: The Doctor's half-human heritage (DW 1996)

While it’s not my main headcanon for the Doctor’s origins, I’ve started to appreciate the “half-human on my mother’s side” explanation more and more over the years. And like Ashildr says in Hell Bent, it does provide an explanation for why the Doctor is so fond of Earth. So I would love a fic going fully into what if this explanation were true? How did the Doctor’s parents meet? Who were they? Did the Doctor spend any time on Earth growing up? What was his relationship like with his human mother, and did he have to leave her behind when he went off to the Academy? Why does the Doctor hide this part of his past from everyone he meets, including his oldest friend the Master and all of his human friends?

Doctor Who (1963)

Characters: Any Doctor, Any of the Doctor’s companions, Any Time Lord character(s), Original Time Lord character(s), Ace McShane, Sixth Doctor, Susan Foreman

  • WB: Academic scholarship on the Time Lords (DW 1963)

What do academics across the galaxy think of the Time Lords? Do they assume that they’re a myth? Or that they’re self-important dusty old scholars? What misconceptions about the Time Lords endure because of Gallifrey’s policy of isolationism and xenophobia? What other misconceptions might come up because the most public face the Time Lords have is via renegades like the Doctor?

  • WB: Anti-Alien Prejudice in Gallifreyan Society (DW 1963)

I don’t think that anyone would argue that the Time Lords, or at least those in power on Gallifrey, are on average a widely xenophobic bunch who look down on the rest of the universe as less than them. The Doctor shows some signs of this himself in the early days. And as seen in Sarah Jane’s exit, aliens weren’t even allowed to step foot on Gallifrey during the Fourth Doctor’s era. Why was this? And why had it changed by the time Leela came to live on Gallifrey? What kind of prejudice did Leela and other non-Gallifreyans who lived on Gallifrey (like Ace in the timeline where she goes to the Time Lord Academy) experience?

  • WB: Gallifreyan Marriage Traditions (DW 1963)

How does marriage work on Gallifrey? Is it seen more as a social/political alliance, or are there often love matches? What are marriage ceremonies like- are Time Lords married in the name of Rassilon? Does regeneration ever complicate things? And how does divorce work?

I would be interested in seeing a marriage between Time Lord OCs, the Doctor and Susan’s grandmother, or a marriage involving other Time Lord characters that we know- Romana (Doctor/Romana is more than welcome for this prompt!), the Rani, more obscure Time Lords, etc.

  • WB: Public Perception of the Doctor on Gallifrey (DW 1963)

I’m trying to imagine what the average Time Lord thinks of the Doctor and it must all be so confusing. One moment he’s a criminal, the next he’s the President, then he’s betrayed Gallifrey, then he’s saved it, then he’s the President again, then he’s a criminal again, and on it goes. Is he respected or admired in some circles? Derided or scorned in other circles? Feared?

  • WB: Time Lord Biology (DW 1963)

Give me all the weird Time Lord biology, please! Time sensitivity, binary vascular system, respiratory bypass, regeneration, healing comas, etc. Feel free to include however many Weird TIme Lord biology facts that the series has introduced over the years, or even make up your own! Eldritch Time Lord headcanons are also very welcome!

I could see this coming up in a hurt/comfort fic, with the companion having to quickly learn about Time Lord biology in order to help the Doctor. Or maybe an academic/educational study on Time Lord biology.

  • WB: Time Lord Political Culture (DW 1963)

Gallifreyan politics as portrayed in the show are kind of crazy and I would love to see a work that tries to make sense of it. The government is by pretty much all accounts ineffective, corrupt, undemocratic (Why do they keep trying to hand the presidency to the Doctor?) and extremely unstable (Again, why do they keep trying to hand the presidency to the Doctor?). How do elections work on Gallifrey and who is eligible to vote? What backroom deals do the Cardinals get up to? What role does political violence play in Gallifreyan politics when regeneration is an option (most of the time)?

  • WB: Time Lord Telepathy (DW 1963)

The Doctor and some of the other Time Lord characters (like Susan and the Master) have displayed so many strange and sometimes even contradictory telepathic powers over the years and I would love to have a story exploring that. What exactly can a Time Lord do with the telepathic abilities and what are the limits? How are Time Lords educated in telepathy? What are the cultural views on telepathy? How does the Doctor feel about his own telepathic abilities considering he’s decided to spend so much of his time with a decidedly non-telepathic species and how often does he find himself using them? I would also love to see a story about a companion’s perspective on all of this.

  • WB: The Gallifreyan Language (DW 1963)

I would love to know more about how the Gallifreyan language works. How does the existence of time travel and multiple timelines affect things like tenses? (How do you talk about events that are complicated by time travel, like an event that you've experience but has yet to occur from the perspective of the person you're talking with?) How does regeneration and potentially encountering other versions of yourself affect pronouns? (How exactly do you address another version of yourself?) What other aspects of Gallifreyan culture can be seen through Gallifrey’s language?

Doctor Who (2005)

Characters: Any Doctor, Any of the Doctor’s companions, Original Time Lord character(s), Ninth Doctor, Tenth Doctor, Eleventh Doctor, Bill Potts

  • WB: Academic scholarship on the Doctor (DW 2005)

I imagine that there have been many scholars over the years who have been confused and fascinated by stories of the Doctor. There must be so many mythic and even contradictory accounts of the Doctor and I would love to see an academic (perhaps frustratedly) try to make sense of all of that. And perhaps by the end of it the academic has an encounter of their own with the Doctor to share?

  • WB: Companion support groups (DW 2005)

I loved the companion support group in The Power of the Doctor, but surely that isn’t the first or only time some former companions of the Doctor have gotten together to share their experiences and support each other after leaving or being left by the Doctor. Feel free to include as many companions as you like, including companions who weren’t left behind in 20th or 21st century Earth. If Mel can make it back to modern day Earth then so can they!

Alternatively, I also would love to see what the companion support group from The Power of the Doctor gets up to after the events of the episode, plus maybe something on how they all got together in the first place.

  • WB: Gallifreyan Mourning Traditions (DW 2005)

Perhaps something about the Doctor mourning a loss and turning to the traditions he grew up with, and having his companions support him. Perhaps even mourning the loss of Gallifrey itself. I would also love to see any headcanons about Gallifreyan religion, and how the Doctor feels about it.

  • WB: President of Earth (DW 2005)

Just. How does this position work? Who advocated for it? UNIT? How did they get every country in the world to agree with it? How familiar are various world governments with the Doctor? What are international relations like in a universe with regular alien invasions and a UN that has a fully funded paramilitary alien hunting organization?

And just who has to pay for it when the presidential plane gets blown up (again)?

  • WB: The Gallifreyan Language (DW 2005)

I would love to know more about how the Gallifreyan language works. How does the existence of time travel and multiple timelines affect things like tenses? (How do you talk about events that are complicated by time travel, like an event that you've experience but has yet to occur from the perspective of the person you're talking with?)
